The Darkening of Mirkwood
A Hobbit of The Shire
Rufus is a young hobbit who has grown up on The Hill overlooking Hobbiton. His family lives at #1 Bag Shot Row, just two doors down from the Gamgee family and across the Party Field from Bag End. His father works in the mill in Hobbiton and his step mother is a seamstress. His mother died of a disease when Rufus was very young. His father remarried and he now has a half-sister, Peony, who is 9.
Since an early age, Rufus has always found his nose buried in books and maps. He has “spent far too much time looking down and not enough looking around” as his neighbor the Gaffer says.
But all of this reading combined with a whole lot of listening has taught Rufus much about the history of his people. He is endlessly fascinated with stories of Halfling history stretching back to the days when hobbits were fighting in the King’s army against the Witch King.
Rufus was always quite content with his scholarly efforts and never imagined doing anything else. But that changed the day Mr. Baggins returned from his adventure with a wagon-load of treasure.
It took years to drag details out of Mr. Baggins and his other neighbors about the goings-on at Bag End but Rufus worked at it ceaselessly and carefully.
During this time, Rufus found a sense of adventure awaken within himself. When he decided he knew everything there was to know about Bilbo’s adventure, it became time to go out and have one his own.
